![]() ![]() "I think you packed them in one of those. Even if it does mean I have to go home." She tucks strands of her hair behind her ear and tosses a makeup bag into her purse. ![]() I'm just really excited to be getting a break. I pick up a roll of packing tape off the dresser. "Oh my God! Oh my God! I'm so glad it's over." Lila skips into the room with a cheery smile on her face and a drink in her hand. I pull my hair into a messy bun and place my charcoal pencils into a box on my bed, packing them with my other art supplies. It's almost completely concealed by drawings and obscures all of my reflection except for my green eyes, which are frosted with infinite pain and secrets. I tape one of my old sketches over the mirror on the dorm wall. ![]() It's what's buried deep inside that frightens me because it's broken, like a shattered mirror. My legs are extensively long and with heels, I'm taller than most of the guys I know. My long auburn hair goes well with my pale complexion. If a reflection revealed what was on the outside, I'd be okay. They know who I used to be a loud-spoken, reckless girl, who showed what she felt to the world. Not because I hate my reflection or that I suffer from Eisoptrophobia. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() This book won the Newbery Award in 1945, and it has stood the test of time very well. There are some animals however, who are still suspicious of the New Folks, and when disaster strikes, these are the animals who are eager to blame the New Folks for everything that goes wrong. The much hoped for garden is planted and Willie, the field mouse, gives the animals reports on what the Folks are up to inside the house.īit by bit the New Folks show their new animal neighbors that they are Good Folks, the kind of Folks who are considerate of little animals and their needs. They do have a cat but he is so old and lazy that no one really considers him to be a threat to the wild animals. ![]() They could be the kind of people who use traps, guns, or poison to kill Small Animals.Īt last, after much watching and waiting, the New Folks arrive. They could be the kind of people who don’t plant gardens. ![]() After all, the New Folks could have cats or dogs. Now everyone is hopeful that good times could lie ahead, but they are cautiously optimistic. There have also been some very hard winters. There have been no fresh vegetables, no grain, and no seeds or nuts. For a long time the house and its gardens have been neglected and this has made life on Rabbit Hill very hard for the Small Animals. All the animals on Rabbit Hill are excited because “New Folks are coming” to live in the Big House. ![]() ![]() ![]() I like how Katherine Addison continues to build her strange fantasy steampunk world. She’s not even that emotional but Thara is so introverted that she still comes off as a refreshing change of pace. ![]() She provides a much needed contrast to Thara’s stoic and conflict-adverse nature. ![]() I think The Grief of Stones is slightly better than Witness for the Dead because we introduce Thara Celehar’s apprentice, Velhiro Tomasaran, who is a young widow that has recently come into her own power to communicate with the dead. Thara soon finds himself investigating a school for young girls, the insidious new technology called photography, and more. In this case, a beloved noblewoman heavily involved in the education of young girls has died mysteriously, and an autopsy confirms it was poisoning. Thara Celehar has been continuing his work in the city of Amalo when he finds himself recruited for yet another murder investigation. It is his job to talk to the dead and give them justice if they have any lingering regrets. ![]() All three books are set in the same universe, but this is only the second installment of the adventures of Thara Celehar, Witness for the Dead. THE GRIEF OF STONES by Katherine Addison is the third installment of The Goblin Emperor series as well as the second in The Cemetaries of Amalo series. ![]() |
